I'm gathering that for each beam, I'd have to use 3 16' long pieces. So my short-term plan is that I'd like to put in 4 rows of 4x4 beams supported by either jacks or something else. I'm also going to add that what I'm describing here in terms of long-term and short term structural work I plan on consulting a structural engineer before starting, but I'd like to get soem idea if I'm on the right track and/or if there are any other suggestions. I'd love to move the heater to the utility room, but that's beyond the scope of what I can do before winter this year. What I know is it NEEDS to be conditioned because the heater is in the crawlspace as is the humidifier, which would likely freeze without the crawlspace being conditioned. All of which I plan on resolving, but I haven't worked out the details. It's about 3' tall, dirt floor, no insulation on the perimeter or in the floor joists, no vapor barrier. At any rate, what I do now I want to plan on being sufficient to last until then, and to be built in a manner that it won't interfere with that work when it's done (i.e. Long term, like in 3 or 4 years, I plan on having a foundation poured around the perimeter, which I'd most likely plan to build a knee wall on top of to which the existing structure will attach. The inspector advised that part of what I need to do is remove the improper supports. And I don't know how the beams and piers are currently laid out, but what I do know is that our inspector said that improperly constructed piers from various things like wood posts and/or stacks of concrete blocks have been added in ill-advised efforts to correct sagging floors, and the result is that the first floor has a lot of places that are crowning. I don't know the joist spacing for certain, but if it's any indication the roof rafters are 24' spacing (and 2x4's!!!) I don't know the joist size either. The overall outside dimensions of the house are 22' x 39'. It was built in 1917 and it's a 1-1/2 floor bungalow built on piers in southeastern Michigan. What I still need to hash out the details of is how I'm going to shore up the floor joists. Okay, I've been all over asking questions since we started planning to buy a particular house, and now we're committed and I've got a lot of my plans made.

If I go with the 3/12 pitch, we are at 12' even at the top plate. If I have a 2/12 pitch, we are looking at a tall wall height of (to the top plate) of 10'8'. Since this building is near my existing barn, which has a 2/12 pitch, I had planned on the building having a 2/12 pitch or a 3/12 pitch.

My original thinking, when I was focused on using dimenisional lumber for roof rathers, was to have a cathederal ceiling with the installation of clere story windows along the 'tall' wall-which faces North, for light. I had not planned on using the attic space. I am still at the design phase of the project and I am flexiable in my design considerations. I am looking to do a single slope roof-this is drive by aesthetic considerations from both my wife and me. Give us some more details on how you want to build this and what space you need inside? Front wall and back wall heights? If they are both 8' and the attic area is of no real use, price up some trusses. Will the sag, a bit more than the 2x10's. Will they bounce when you walk up there, certainly will.

With no live load like a deck full of party goers, all they have to hold up is themselves, the strapping, and the steel. You could of coures make the shed 15.5' or whae ever works.Īs for load capacity, 2x8's 16' oc are not that far below 2x10's Will they hold, absolutely. However, the 16 foot dimension is still going to need a rafter slightly over the 16' mark and those 18' or 20' boards can get expensive. Will you want to overhang anything front and back or just end flush? I'm in snow country so we always use an overhang. If I'm reading you correctly, you want a single slope roof with rafters running the 16' dimension. I'm not the best at this, but can try to get you started.
